Our second trip outside of Lisbon proper (but still in the metropolitan area) was to Almada, a city across the Tagus River. Mr. Public Transportation took the subway to the ferry port and then a bus to the main attraction--all on the navegante card we bought on our Cascais trip earlier this week. If you visit and choose this option, be sure to include all modes (subway, train, bus, ferry) when you top the card off.
A view from the ferry trip across the Tagus.
What we came to visit here is the Sanctaury of Christ the King shrine. Be sure to take bus 3001 since it takes you all the way up the hill. We took another one (that I read would take you there) but we had to walk a bit.
Modeled on Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the monument was completed in 1959.
View of the 25 April Bridge from the grounds. See the shadow in the bottom right?
View of Lisbon (Belem) from the grounds. You can see the Monument of Discoveries on the right and the Belem Tower on the left.
Another city view, looking towards the mouth of the river.
We didn't go up to the top, if you're wondering. We felt the views and photos we got were pretty good without that. We also took the 3001 bus back down--lesson learned.
One more Lisbon Christmas Market tonight--Wonderland Lisboa. This was in the King Edward VII Park--pretty close to where we stayed in 2022.
