We're staying put for a couple of days. This is not only to save money (when you're gone as long as we are, you can't spend like you do on a one- or two-week vacation) but it allows us to look around and see things we'd miss on a shorter trip or a guided tour. When I am shopping in a grocery store, riding the bus, or drinking a morning coffee in a corner cafe, I like to imagine that I'm living like a local. Though I'm probably sticking out like a sore thumb.
These are some general photos I took around town, starting with our apartment elevator. I think the building dates from the 50s or early 60s, but the elevator really took some getting used to. You manually opened the outer wooden door, stepped in and closed it (or it wouldn't move), then closed the inner door and chose your floor. The building had rentals and residents, so there were signs (in Italian--thank you Google translate) that said to close the outer door when you left so it would work for others.

A close up of the (huge) Nativity scene. Since it was nearly March, I doubt it is ever taken down.
Places you can go from Salerno by train--Rome, Naples, Florence, Turin, Milan...I would choose Reggio Emilia.
One of the coffees I had in town. Yes, I see the irony of not blending in by taking a picture of my coffee cup.
Next up is a day trip to a famous Italian coastal area--not Cinque Terre, the other one.
