Taste of the Philippines (Feb 8, 2025)

Today was a slower-than-usual day on this slow travel trip.  I have to admit that being cooped up on a train for more than five and a half hours was pretty draining.  The seats and the ride were comfortable, but you don't get much rest really.  I still think it's better than flying though.

You may be wondering how I am eating and drinking all these calories without blowing up like a balloon.  Walking is the secret.  As you've noticed I like to get out and walk in the mornings and since we aren't driving around, walking is what we have to do.  Even walking to a bus stop or train station helps get our steps in.  My iPhone says I'm averaging five or six miles a day.

Speaking of morning walks, here's what I saw today.

Monument to those who helped to build a unified Italy.

I think it would be cool to live in a triangular apartment in Italy.

The seafood is fresh

Our apartment host is quite the Bari booster, which suits me fine.  She actually lives around the corner from our place and she told us about a Filipino Restaurant that we'll be going to for dinner.  I noticed on my first day out that Bari had quite a few immigrants from around the world.  I saw Filipinos, Georgians, Armenians, Ukrainians, and others.  It's not like Rome of course, but it seems more diverse than Florence--at least from what I saw.

This is the restaurant's logo.  It's named Pinoy (appropriately) and it is the first Filipino restaurant in Bari.

Appetizer: Beef Lumpia Shanghai

Fe's meal:  Pork Adobo with rice

My meal: Chop Suey

Fe's to go (for later): Lechon Kawali

Here we are after the meal.

So, that's it for today.  Tomorrow we'll be looking some more around the Old Town.

Final Thoughts

It was our first time trying slow travel, and I'd say it was a success.  We learned from our mistakes--mostly scheduling and budgeting--...
