Braga (Dec 14-15, 2024)

Human habitation in the Braga area goes back thousands of years, but the "official" founding of the city was in 16 BC by the Romans.  It's the third largest city in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto) with a population of just over 200,000.

Fe and I had been here before on a day trip from Porto in October 2022.  We saw a lot then but there was also a lot we missed--and it was raining heavily most of the time.  This is a chance to see everything at our own pace.

The first day I walked around town in the morning and later we both went out after dinner to see the Christmas lights.

Teatro Circo, Av. da Liberdade

Another building across the street--we went shopping in the Wells later.

Monument of the Misericórdia of Braga.  The hands represent the request for help and the offering of help.

Christmas horse which may also be an anarchist.

Braga is known as the Rome of Portugal since the area has over 30 churches.  The next morning I walked around town again and visited a few--didn't get inside all of them though.

It wasn't all churches though.

St Barbara's Garden and the Archbishop's Palace

Dragon Fountain next to St Barbara's Garden

A castle wall incorporated into the coffee shop I was visiting.

These were a busy couple of days and our time here is just beginning. We're looking forward to exploring more.

Final Thoughts

It was our first time trying slow travel, and I'd say it was a success.  We learned from our mistakes--mostly scheduling and budgeting--...
