Tomar (Full) Day One (Dec 9, 2024)

I am averaging about five to six miles of walking a day which is good with all the pastries I've been eating.  I did walk around town this morning but the focus of the day today is the trip to the Tomar Castle and the Convento do Cristo.  They are listed as two separate sites, but they're actually right up against each other.

View of the convent from the castle.

Another view

Ruins of Prince Henry's quarters.  Not just any Prince Harry, it's Prince Henry the Navigator.

Courtyard View

Fe outside the South Portal

Washing Cloister.  The square structures were where monks would wash their clothes.

Cloister

View from another cloister--there are so many, I'm getting them mixed up.

Main Cloister

Crucifix inside the Charola (Rotunda)

Charola View

Paintings along the outer wall.

Tiled (azulejos) chapel

Refectory

Kitchen

The cost of entry for the Convent was 10 euros per person (walking around the castle grounds was free) and I thought it was worth it.  It takes a lot to maintain something like this and it was a chance to soak in a lot of history.

After another big day of walking--walked up to and back from the castle (!)--we had a quick dinner and then back to our room.  It's kind of nice to not have to rush around.

Final Thoughts
